How To Maintain Hardwood Floors

swoodfloor2The proper maintenance of your hardwood floors not only contributes to the beauty of your home but it will also prolong and increase the life of your wood floors for many years. Most people feel that maintaining their hardwood floor is a difficult task but to the contrary, wood floor maintenance is very easy and straight forward.  There are two important measures when it comes to maintenance of Hardwood floors. The first measure is damage prevention measure and the second measure is the ongoing or regular care.

Damage Prevention
Damage prevention is the easiest measure and requires very little effort, but it is critical to apply this little effort to ensure your floors remain unscratched and shinny for years to come.

It is important that you do not drag heavy furniture or any sharp object on your wood floor as it can easily scratch your wood floor.  if you need to move furniture around be sure to have a helper so that you can lift the furniture or attach a robber or plastic shoe to the furniture leg so that your wood floors are not damaged.

Whenever you enter your home be sure to remove your shoes or remove the dirt of your shoes to ensure that it does not scratch your shinny hardwood floors.  This is especially important in winter when the city spreads salt on the roads and sidewalks. The salt deposits on your shoes can easily damage the coding of your wood floors.

Another preventive measure is to ensure that you do not spill food or liquids on your floor.  In case of an accident be sure to remove the liquid quickly as it can easily penetrate through and damage your wood floors.

Use window covering or drapery to prevent the sun’s UV ray from damaging your wood floors.  The UV rays from the sun can cause your floors to fade and look old. Also note that placing a rug on your wood floor can cause some discoloration of that area.

Ongoing Maintenance of Hardwood Floors
Cleaning your wood floors not only keeps them looking shinny but it will also increase the life of your floors.  Be sure to regularly vacuum your wood floors using vacuums that are designed for cleaning wood floors or bare floors.

For hard to remove marks, use special treatment that are specifically designed for hardwood floors.  Generally, you should not apply the treatment to wood floors directly but to a mop or a cloth.  Be sure to read and follow the instructions before applying the treatment.  Never use water to clean your wood floors as water will damage your hardwood floors.
