Solar Roof Tiles – Going Green and Saving Thousands

The price of utilities has drastically increased over the last decade and will continue to rise in the foreseeable future as many sources are becoming scarce.    Electricity is something that everyone uses, and we are willing to spend ridiculous amounts each month to use it.  Homeowners who are looking to reduce cost need to address the problem with electricity.   One approach in reducing your electric bill is by using renewable energy through installing solar roof tiles.

Still many people are confused about the difference between solar roof tiles and solar panel.  Solar panels are large units that are installed on top of the roof that makes your home to appear somewhat unattractive.  Solar roof tiles resemble asphalt shingles in size and finish, but are covered with thin film of photovoltaic cell substance that is responsible for converting sunlight into electricity.   Solar roof tiles are easy to work with as they are light weight- they generally weight around 2.5 pounds per square foot.  Another advantage with solar roof tiles is their durability.  With proper maintenance these tiles can last 20 years or longer.

So why should you consider installing solar roof tiles?  The answer is simple: if you live a sunny area, you will never have to pay for electricity again.  It is said that electricity cost for a single family home is around $2000 a year.  That is a huge saving year after year.  Even, if you don’t live in an always sunny area, you can still save a considerable amount on your electricity bill.  Another reason is that renewable energy saves the environment and helps preserve the planet for our children and grandchildren.  Today, many homeowners are environmental conscious and are looking for various ways of green living; energy consumption is at the top of green living.

If you’re planning to install solar roofing tiles, make sure that you check with your local municipality, city planning department and tax department to find out about various incentives that may exist for this project.

Another way to save on money is to install “underfloor heating” – this can save up to 20% on heating bills. Combine this with solar panels, a heat source pump and you’ll be saving loads of energy!
